Coded Skin (2003) is part of an on-going audio/visual/photography project on Perceptions of Blackness. The project stems from spaceape's interest in the processes that codify race and species through the skin. These processes have mainly been understood in terms of representation whereby the perception of skin is a reflection of identity and belonging. However, spaceape's interest in the perception of blackness draws more closely on the Theory of Affect, according to which perception is not an action of the mind, but involves the synaesthetic action of the senses. We feel before we interpret. From this standpoint, my use of photography aims to act on the senses so as to challenge the habitual perception of blackness. These images were exhibited as part of Coded Skin - the video - (click here) at the Instituto Universitario Orientale di Napoli, Naples, Italy in December 2003.
